  4.     A Chevrolet Celebrity, deadheading back to Boston from
  5. Logan Airport, is pulled over by a Boston policeman. The
  6. offense: an expired inspection sticker; the fine: $50. But not
  7. for a car bearing license plate STATE 1 that moments earlier
  8. had Massachusetts' favorite son riding in the rear passenger
  9. seat. A warning will do.

  11.     No big deal, until the Boston Herald ran a picture of the
  12. Chevy with its spanking-new inspection sticker in the window and
  13. the Governor and his driver standing nearby. Headline: DUKE
  14. FAILS TO STICK TO INSPECT LAW. Before long, the crack drive-time
  15. team at one of Cape Cod's largest radio stations began repeating
  16. the story, complete with sirens in the background, advising
  17. listeners that they too could avoid tickets if only they had a
  18. Governor riding in the backseat. The "Backseat Governor" spots
  19. tapped a well of venom toward Dukakis, who recently jacked up
  20. registration and driver's-license fees as well as speeding
  21. fines. In response to callers, workers at WCOD began making
  22. cardboard cutouts -- no redundancy intended -- of the Duke
  23. suitable for backseat duty. The first batch of 100 propped-up
  24. caricatures sold out immediately, and there were orders for 500
  25. more.
